>> live from the kgo tv broadcast center. this is abc 7 news. the bay area's annual freedom train tribute for martin luther king, jr. faces an uncertain future. today's ride could mark the end of the i hrides. ticket sales are down and that is threatening the freedom ride's existence. amy. >> reporter: hi, eric, yeah, organizers had sleepless nights. we have good news to report.

had they put out a plea to the community and they had a surge in ticket sales last night. these people have a new title. the people that saved the freedom train. >> we will run the train next year if we keep getting community support and we get sponsors and donors, we will run it after next year. right now, it's a year to year thing. >> reporter: this year looked to be the worst with only 300 tickets sold as of thursday. the train holds 1600 people and costs $6,000 to charter. >> i was worried because i love dr. king and i love this train and everything it stands for and i just thought, you know what? i'm going to ask the community. they have never failed us before and they won't fail us now and they didn't fail us. >> reporter: new and old showed up this morning.

full of th full of enthusiasm. >> all of us, first time coming. we heard so much about it and how educational and wonderful it is. so we brought the youth from church. >> reporter: there's a push to keep young people interested. one group is trying to bridge the gap through dance and approximaput on a performance. >> a lot of the things that dr. king spoke and sought was this. but we are doing it through the arts. >> reporter: will the excitement be enough to keep it going? they say it's the only martin luther king freedom train running in the country. >> i love the whole history of the train. >> reporter: we don't know how many people boarded the train this morning. she said that she will not have the number until she goes home and hand counts all the tickets. they covered their cost, selling the tickets at $15 east.

they are considering that a victory for now. abc 7 news. ♪ >> and the king holiday got off to a musical start, marching bands and performers took part in a parade and rally. this year marks the 25th anniversary celebration honoring dr. king. this year's program dedicated to the late nelson mandela. new this morning, b.a.r.t.'s nine-month old contract battle with the unions wound up costing the agency millions. it's reported that they spent $2.2 million to reach the final settlement and that does not account for the $5 million lost in the strikes. they spent money chartering buses to get people around. here is how it breaks down. nearly half, about $1 million

went to pay the salaries of 53 union negotiators. b.a.r.t. spent $1.2 billion on outside consultants and pr specialists. and nearly $5,000 was spent on takeout food. nick's plaza cafe took $500 in sandwich orders. critics say that raising minimum wage could be bad for employers and workers. a follow-up study was done on the 25% minimum wage hike last year and found that it led to higher prices to consumers and fewerer hours for workers. 2/3 of the city's restaurants raised the prices to compensate and another 44% reduced staff hours. 42% let workers go. richmond and san francisco are considering minimum wage hikes.

new this morning oakland police want to know who is behind the flyers depicting swastikas on a jewish woman's forehead. the candidate is a candidate for mayor next november nobody has claimed responsibility for doing this to libby. she was supposedly the flyer supposedly represented opponents of a controversial is surveillance center for police and firefighters in the area. she said that she is surprised she is being targeted because she has been skeptical of the cent arer. governor chris christie's administration is said to have withheld super storm sandy's relief funds. we have the latest. >> reporter: new jersey governor

chris christie's administration is fighting new allegations. they are claiming that christie informed her that her city would not get super storm sandy recovery money unless she backed christie's pet project. she was approached about it a a public event. >> she said that she was with him on friday night and it was a direct message from the governor. >> reporter: the staffer denies the shake down. >> any suggestion that the sandy funds were tied to approval of any project in new jersey is completely false. >> reporter: in a statement, christie staffers say that hoboken was approved for $70 million. but zimer claims her city received $342,000 of the $100 million requested. yesterday the mayor turned over diary entries and other documents to federal prosecutors. in one diary entry, zimer said that the lieutenant governor

season. outside, the 49ers faithful have gathered. they are supporting the team and congratulating the player on another fun and successful season. it's not the end of the season celebration they had hoped for, but the 49ers faithful young and and old, showed up early at the head you are quoquarter headquarters. this family drove in to say thank you. >> i'm still a fan, win or lose. and yesterday, it was just -- it was not our day. >> reporter: the team arrived in t the san jose international airport after the loss to the seahawks and filed in to six waiting buses. cheering fans greeting them at the end of the short trip to santa clara, as they were driven in to the gates of their headquarters. >> i'm sure they are feeling depressed and done after such an awesome game, and a toughened to the game, what better way to come home than all of us

quickly. main storm track, again, up around the great lakes in the upper midwest. you can see a clipper system coming down through minneapolis and far go, that will spread light snow through areas and take a turn to the east and spread light snow across the great lakes and in to new england. call ahead if you are going that way. it will not be a big store. 59 and in mountain view and fremont. a lot of us in the mid to upper 50s. 60 in antioch, and 63 in los gatos, half moon bay running at 50 and same thing with santa rosa. this morning the sun did come out down in san jose and santa clara and a few clouds will be in the skies. near record highs again. cooler breezes through the mid week and then those breezes turn off shore as we go to thursday and friday. that is when we can see a heightened fire danger. you can see how nice it looks

theity coast. temperatures 8 to 12 degrees above average and the sun will set at 5:20. here is a look down south. we will be close, mid to upper 60s and low to mid 70s. mid to upper 60s most of the peninsula. and we will be in the mid to upper 60s especially away from the cloud cover. that will spill in to downtown. the mid 60s, 70 the warm spot up north in santa rosa. and mid to upper 60s throughout the east bay valley. freezing cold in lansing. low 40s, and 30s elsewhere with 57 in san francisco, the low spot. look at the areas on of low pressure the high is dominating and it's creating a split flow, whenever you have that, you just do not have strong storms. they go around the high pressure, that means they are going around us. tomorrow though, the winds will shift on shore with the passing low areas of low pressure.
